The Sport Leicht badge appeared as far back as 1954 and since then has morphed into a beautifully engineered two seat GT vehicle with the appeal of open-top driving for enthusiastic cabriolet owners.
The SL models we see at Cayman Autos, include the R129, launched between 1989-2002 – a classic soft top cabriolet that is steadily increasing in value and extremely collectible, the R230 between 2001-2011 and the latest R231 hard top folding convertible.
The Mercedes SLR129 model was the first convertible/roadster to offer the automatic rollbar deployment in event of rollover. The cabriolet owner can also manually raise and lower the rollbar should he or she choose to. This facilitates the clean look of the R129 without compromising the occupant’s safety.
The R230 came to the market in 2001 and was equipped with a steel folding roof, the Mercedes Vario Roof. This cabriolet roof was well built, so that when the driver had the hard top roof closed, there was the feeling of driving a big coupe.
Like all soft and hard top cabriolets they have their faults and in particular, lack of attention to care and maintenance can lead to water ingress and the usual electrical and mechanical faults caused by water damage on the operational roof system
