F33 Hard Top or G23 Soft Top?

Which 4 Series Do You Have

If the roof is metal and folds into three pieces, it is an F33, built from 2014 to 2020. If it is fabric, it is a G23, built from 2021 onwards. The two are separate repair jobs.

The F33's hardtop runs on an electric pump, rams and hoses. Leaking rams and hoses are the fault we see most, followed by pump failure after years of cycling a heavy three-piece roof. The F33 succeeded the BMW 3 Series E93, carrying the folding hardtop concept over in redeveloped form. The M4 Convertible (F83) uses the same roof, so the repair is identical.

The G23 is a different roof altogether. Rigid panels inside the fabric fold into a Z shape as it stows, and the heated glass rear window separates from the rest of the roof on the way down.

How do I reset my BMW 4 Series convertible roof?

A stuck or unresponsive roof can often be resynchronised with a reset, especially after a flat battery or an interrupted cycle. On most BMW convertibles, this means turning the ignition to the accessory position and holding the roof switch closed until the roof completes a full cycle. Do not repeatedly force the switch if it does not respond, as this can cause further damage.

A reset only helps where the roof has lost its position, and nothing has actually broken. If the reset does not work, or the warning light stays on afterwards, the fault is mechanical, hydraulic or sensor-related, and it will keep returning until the cause is fixed. Our technicians can reset the roof module properly and diagnose the underlying cause at the same time on both the F33 and the G23.

My BMW 4 Series roof is stuck halfway. What should I do?

A 4 Series roof that stops partway through its cycle is one of the most common faults we see. It is usually caused by a position sensor failure, a microswitch fault, a drop in hydraulic pressure on the F33, or a frame alignment issue, all of which stop the control module from completing the roof sequence. Do not try to force the roof by hand, as this can cause additional damage.

Do you repair the BMW M4 Convertible roof?

Yes. The M4 Convertible shares its roof system with the standard 4 Series of the same generation. The F83 uses the same folding hardtop as the F33, and the G83 uses the same fabric soft top as the G23. We repair both in the same way as their non-M counterparts.

What is the BMW 4 Series convertible roof replacement cost?

A full BMW 4 Series soft top fabric replacement (G23) can cost well over £1,000. However, a full replacement is not always necessary.
