Cayman Autos are happy to announce that the 2016 Mini Challenge Championship has begun! We are the proud sponsors of Adam Davey, who is driving car #21 in the championship — the Cayman Blue Machine. Adam is a very talented driver and we are very excited about his prospects this season.

Results From The First Races

The first Mini Challenge Championship races were held last month, on the 24/25th of April at Donington Park. There were three Mini Cooper races over the weekend and all were tightly contested affairs!

There were 17 drivers competing in the Cooper Class and 5 competing in the Cooper S Class. The cars in the Cooper class feature 135Bhp, 1.6 litre normally aspirated engines while the Cooper S cars have 220Bhp, 1.6 litre turbo engines.

Both models fly around the track at insanely fast speeds! The agility and rapid acceleration of the Mini Cooper makes them ideal for competitive races. The skill of drivers really comes to the fore in these smaller cars.

The first race had conditions perfect for Mini Cooper racing — overcast and dry. Adam did well to post a time of 1.25.729 which put him in 9th position on the grid. Fellow Excelr8 teammate Max Bladon had pole position with a time of 1.24.928, a mere 0.008 seconds ahead of Adam.

It was a close race, with Davey competing with Haig and Neal throughout the race. Bladon was the eventual victor with Davey coming in a respectable 7th.

The Mini Coopers raced again on Sunday, with similar weather conditions. Davey had a fantastic start to the race and reached third position. After some very competitive racing, he finished in 3rd overall — his first podium placement for the year.

There was one more race later that afternoon. Unfortunately, an accident at Redgates corner damaged Adam’s steering column, leaving him to finish in 10th position.

Overall, Adam is now in 4th position on the Mini Challenge leaderboard! A really great start to the year for this talented young driver. Some of the upcoming Mini Challenge events include:

The Best of British

Adam is competing in The Best of British competition, later this year. This competition highlights some of the best vehicles that have been produced by British manufacturers, including the incredible Mini Cooper.

In this competition, all vehicles have a primary sponsor. For Adam, his sponsor is LUKE, a well-known manufacturer of high-quality motorsport, sports and road seats. LUKE also produce fantastic seat harnesses.

All LUKE products are designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom. They have a strong reputation for developing safety products that are innovative, reliable, and affordable. If you like supporting home-grown companies, take a look at the great products that LUKE make — their gear is seriously impressive.

Some of the other sponsors involved in the Mini Challenge this year include: Powerflex, Scorpion, Manic, Dunlop, Steel Seal, Qua1fe, Refined hospitality, Sunoco, Corbeau, Luke, Showtrax, PowerMaxed, Ryan, Carscene, JB Weld, Forge Motor Sport, Alcon, Mintex, Hel, Love Mini Magazine, and Dave Young Photgraphics.

The Daytona Race Weekend

Running since 1962, Daytona is a 24-hour marathon race that pushes drivers to their limits! The race starts at sunrise and finishes at sunset, making it quite the spectacle for motorsports fans. This year, competitors in the Mini Challenge, JCW, Cooper & Cooper S classes will be eligible for a prize drive during the weekend. Adam is very excited to take part in this great event!

2016 Sunoco Challenge

The 2016 Sunoco Challenge is another exciting motorsports event which the Mini Coopers will be participating in. It is a great event that raises money for the research of Parkinson’s disease. Sonny Whelen from Whelen Motorsports is heavily involved in the organising of this event, which raises thousands of dollars each year.

Celebrities Appearing in the Mini Challenge This Year!

The 2016 Mini Challenge has attracted a number of well-known racers who you may be familiar with. Some of the famous faces that will be showing up inside a Mini Cooper this year include:

James Turkington

James is the younger brother of two-time British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington. He will be driving in one of the championship’s new F56 JCW cars. This championship will represent the 22-year-old’s first races on the British mainland.

Charlie Butler-Henderson

Charlie Butler-Henderson is the winner of the Mini Challenge in 2015. He only took seven races to lock in his victory last year, with some very impressive performances.

Last year Butler-Henderson was racing for the Oakfield Motorsport team, but he will be moving to the MINI UK VIP Customer Support Team. He will also be racing in a new F56 JCW car with an exciting new paint job. It has been a big year for Charlie as he has been a brand ambassador for MINI UK. It will be great to see him on the track again.

Henry Neal and Will Neal

Another member of the Neal family will be taking to the track this year — Will Neal. He will be lining up in the Cooper class while his brother Henry will be racing in the premier F56 JCW Class. Will is the youngest son of three-time British Touring Car champion Matt Neal.

The 2016 Mini Challenge to be Televised!

Another exciting development for the 2016 Mini Challenge is that it will be televised on both Channel 4 and Motorsport TV! Premier motorsport TV production house Hayfisher will take on filming and production duties, capturing images of these powerful little cars as they blast around the track!

At least four rounds will be televised on Channel 4 in a 30-minute format while there will be 1-hour programmes on Motorsport TV. The Hayfisher team is based in the West Midlands and have years of experience filming motorsports events including Formula E, The Blancpain GT series and Goodwood.
